THREE ORGANISATIONS – ONE PATHWAY
These three individual organisations all agree that it is now time to update education policy and practice in line with the latest research in child development, attachment and neuroscience.
These three well respected and established organisations work within the UK and internationally.
These three organisations propose that once whole school communities have had training in the area of attachment needs of children that two strategic pastoral members of staff are chosen. They will then lead on and facilitate both advocacy and support interventions on behalf of children and young people who have suffered relational trauma and loss/ACEs.
OUR PROPOSAL
These three organisations propose that once whole school communities have had training in the area of attachment needs of children that two strategic pastoral members of staff are chosen. They will then lead on and facilitate both advocacy and support interventions on behalf of children and young people who have suffered relational trauma and loss/ACEs.
ACEs refer to adverse childhood experiences. An adverse childhood experience is defined as a traumatic event or events that can have negative, lasting effects on health & well-being. The ACEs study was initially published in the USA[1] and later replicated in both England[2] and Wales[3]. It is clear that we need to use ACEs awareness to support guide our policy and practice.
The developmental pathway recommended for these strategic members of staff are in this order over a three-year period and onwards:
- To complete the 7-day Attachment Lead course over the course of the year run by TouchBase Centre CIC to gain Attachment Lead status.
- To complete the 5 day level 1 & group Theraplay® training.
- To complete the 4-day level 1 DDP training.
- Continued CPD in all 3 trainings by attending local support groups, regional hubs, conferences and by completing further reading.
CONTEXT
School staff can feel increasingly overwhelmed by how best to respond to the challenges from pupils who have experienced relational trauma or loss, often as a result of adverse childhood experiences.
We are concerned that exclusion figures continue to rise in the UK. Existing alongside and adding to this sense of overwhelm are widespread misunderstandings and misinterpretations in the education system about the impact of trauma and loss on young hearts, minds and bodies. Sadly zero tolerance policies in schools can exacerbate insecurity and shame fuelled responses.
We have come together as three well respected and established organisations to integrate an empathic understanding of the devastating impact of trauma and loss on our pupils and to communicate alternative ways of being into educational settings. Our aim is to nurture attuned and responsive connections between pupils and their teachers and support staff and to fundamentally increase permanence and academic outcomes in our schools.
